CONCORD, N.C. — A devastating shock to more than 1,000 Cabarrus County workers: They’re losing their jobs a year earlier than expected. Cabarrus County leaders were surprised when Philip Morris announced it was closing its doors in Concord by the end of the year 2010.

The Phoenix Cos., which is trying to cut millions of dollars in expenses, confirmed Wednesday it has notified roughly 170 employees so far — 75 of them in Hartford — that their jobs are being eliminated. The cuts were part of layoffs announced in late February, when Phoenix said it would eliminate more than 250 of its 1,100 employees companywide, about 25 percent of the work force.
