Let me give you a list of resignation circumstances which most unemployment administrators would consider as “just cause” and grant benefits to the worker: Give 2 or 3 chances with formal warnings to improve before sacking. As a small company owner, it is probably that you’ll not have a Personnel representative or a third-party contractor that will conduct exit interviews.

We’ve been bouncing back and forth with Above the Law, speculating about what was certainly meant to be an innocuous comment in a Washington Post article about a layoff consultant. We, ATL, and the ATL commenters have been trying to figure out what firm called the consultant. The criteria: 2 rounds already this year, considering laying off a dozen more this month, with possibly more to follow in the fall.

Sources familiar with the talks, speaking on condition of anonymity because the negotiations are confidential, said the administration’s offer involves a 7 percent pay cut and about 18 furlough days a year for two years. The administration’s proposal is in response to a union offer last week of a 5 percent pay cut. The combination pay cut and 1 1/2 furlough days a month would save the state roughly the same amount of money as Gov.
