August was a good month as far as layoffs go. For the first time since December 2008 there was a week without a layoff, which is cause for some celebration. Although this is good news, the August numbers were still worse than predicted, and unemployment is still at record levels. Always respect the jobholder and try not show favoritism. Sacking a worker is a difficult task that no one enjoys having to do. By using a condescending tone with a jobholder, a human resource person or small company owner runs the risk of alienating the jobholder and doing more damage than good.
